Description
The Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial is one of the most beautiful white wines in the world and without a doubt the best white wine ever made in Spain. The wine is made mainly from Viura (97%) with a little Malvasia (3%) from a vineyard planted in 1945 and located in the highest part of the Ygay estate at 485 meters altitude in La Rioja Alta. The wine is aged for 252 months in American oak barriques of 225 liters and 67 months in concrete tanks. The Ygay Gran Reserva Blanco has a very subtle nose and it is a little shy even a little closed at first. This wine from 1986 was only bottled in March 2015 so a little crazy to say that this wine still feels very young but that is the case. This amazing wine will improve with age and has a drinking window of 50+ years. An amusing anecdote is that the 1919 vintage of this wine was tasted after 97 years and was still in perfect condition.
Luis Gutiérrez from Wine-Advocate tasted a bottle and tasted an opened bottle again after a week and there was no unpleasant oxidation to be tasted and he found the wine (even) more beautiful after it had been open for a day. The next release of this cult wine will probably be the 1998, so we will definitely have to wait until 2028 for the next release of this wine
In the nose we smell spicy aromas with hints of flower petals, dried fruits, quince. In the mouth this wine is very elegant and powerful. It has an excellent acidity. Very mineral and fat with a very long and unprecedentedly beautiful aftertaste. There is really nothing negative about the wine and this is the perfect wine and this is confirmed by Parker who gave this wine 100 points.
It hasn't even reached the market yet but it has already made history: Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986, a real gem made by Marqués de Murrieta, has been rated 100 Points by Robert Parker. This is the first time such an important curly brace is given to a white wine is Spain.
After being tasted by Luis Gutierrez, the critic responsible for reviewing Spanish wines in Robert Parker's 'The Wine Advocate', he states that it is “one of the best white wines I've ever tasted in my whole life.” Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986 stands as the only wine that has reached the highest score, an even more difficult achievement for a white wine.
This milestone not only marks a before and after in the history of Spanish wines, but also highlights the ongoing serious and honest commitment that has always characterized Marqués de Murrieta and the Cebrián-Sagarriga family. Celebrating its 165's anniversary, the oldest winery in Rioja, led by Vicente Cebrian-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, is more alive than ever.
With this vintage, the winery resumes its long tradition of making Castillo Ygay White and makes it the best possible way: presenting a wine that turns 30 years to the market. In order to rate the wine, the prestigious publication led by Robert Parker made a vertical tasting of Castillo Ygay white, from 1919 to 1986. Among the vintages tasted, the critic also gave top marks to two other historic vintages: Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1919 and 1932. the mark stands as the only in the world to achieve 100 points by Parker three times in one tasting, celebrating 100 years of high scores.
After spending 252 months in 225 liter American oak barrels and 67 months in concrete tanks, the wine is aged in bottles for more than three years to reach, 30 years after the harvest of the grape, the best expression of this wine from the first Rioja winery founded in 1852.
Castillo Ygay -red and white- represents the raison d'être of Marqués de Murrieta: timeless wines that remain in history and are located at the apex of global excellence forever.

I have been terribly excited about this wine since I first learned that (part of) it was still in cement waiting to be bottled in September 2013. I consider the rare white Castillo Ygay one of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain, and the 1986 Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial is a great addition to the portfolio of the winery--an historic wine that is coming back to life. I did a vertical tasting of many of the old, historic vintages of this wine, and they are included in a separate article in this very same issue. This 1986 had seen the light as a limited early release bottled in 1992 and sold around 1995, and some bottles might still be found in the market. But most of it remained unbottled and was kept at the winery, where it stayed in oak for 21 years, followed by some six years in cement vats until it was bottled. It has 13.5% alcohol, an extremely low pH of 2.98 and 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric). It has a very subtle nose and it's a bit shy, a little closed at first. It was only bottled one and a half years ago, and it's not crazy to say that the wine is showing extremely young. The wine shows more open the day after, when it has developed some nuances of mushrooms and verbena tea. This is mostly Viura with perhaps a pinch of Malvasía Riojana (aka Alarije). The palate is both powerful and elegant, with superb acidity and great length, with volume and sharpness, with a mineral, umami-driven finish. It fills your mouth, tickles your taste buds and makes you salivate. There is nothing negative about the wine; there is no excess oak, nothing blurry, nothing to improve... perhaps the bottle used! I think this is a perfect wine. It seems to be getting younger and younger with time in the glass; it seems to be getting more focused and sharper, and I have no doubt the wine will evolve and last for a very, very, very long time in bottle. I kept the opened bottle for almost one week and the wine didn't move one inch--no oxidation or any signs of fatigue. Having tasted many other vintages, including the also perfect 1919 (which is still going strong at age 97), I have no doubt we're talking about a white for the next 50 years. Looking at the older vintages, I might even be underestimating its life span. The potential next release could be the 1998 in no less than ten years' time.
Yes, I'm afraid, the price quoted here seems to be correct (but not adequate), but this otherworldly white 1986 has been priced in the stratosphere. Unfortunately, the speculative price tag makes me very angry, but price does not affect the score. The wine is simply stunning. The only issue here is the price tag, to which I can only say that when I went to taste the wine, I also took the opportunity to cancel an order I had previously put in for one case of this wine. At this price, I won't be buying. What a shame.

Bright yellow-gold. A hugely complex bouquet evokes dried pear, peach nectar, orange marmalade, honey, marzipan and chamomile, with vanilla and smoky mineral notes in the background. Stains the palate with sappy, deeply concentrated citrus, orchard and pit fruit flavors, plus suggestions of brown butter, shortbread and orange zest. This wine is fully mature but there's no sign of it slowing down anytime soon. Finishes with superb persistence and energy, leaving peach liqueur, buttered toast and honey notes behind, eventually. This is one of the most remarkable white wines that I have ever had, from anywhere.

Marqués de Murrieta was founded in 1852, and is one of Rioja’s oldest, Murrieta holds over 300 hectares of vines at Finca Ygay, the property that provides the fruit for all of their wines. These are eminently age-worthy reds, even the entry-level bottling, which can be among Rioja’s finest values. At the high end, Castillo Ygay is consistently among Spain’s greatest wines. Although Castillo Ygay isn’t exactly cheap, it delivers excellent value given its world-class quality. Marqués de Murrieta is an excellent source for traditional Riojas available in quantity that can often be at the pinnacle of quality for the region.

Bodegas that bears his name, but is also considered to be the founder of the modern wine trade in the Rioja. Luciano Murrieta was born in 1822 in what was then the Spanish province of Peru. After the independence of Peru, he ended up in London. Here he marveled at the popularity of Bordeaux wines and was inspired by this style of winemaking, where the wines matured in wooden casks for a period of time. In 1852 he exported his first wines and was so successful that other vintners followed his techniques.
Today Marquès de Murrieta is the oldest active wine company in the Rioja. In 1983, the company was acquired by Duke of Creixell, Vincente Cebrián. This preserves the family element of the wine company. After his sudden death in 1996, his children led by Vicente jr took the helm and continued their father's perfectionism.
Vicente (2nd call sign Dalmau) was born in 1970. He spends his youth alternately in Madrid and Galicia, where he spends summers in Pazo Barrantes, the winery that has been owned by his family since the 16th century. His roots and the good times he spent in Galicia have forever given this area a special place in his heart.
After his studies in Madrid, he continued his education in the USA and after returning to Spain he completed his university education (Economics, Business & Law degrees). From that moment on, Vincente will fully focus on his father's company, of which he will lead after his unexpected death in 1996. In the years that followed, he and his sister Cristina revolutionized the bodega in a revolutionary way and the quality of the wines reached very high heights: they are now among the best in the world. The Cebrian-Sagarriga Suarez Llanos family owns two wineries; Marqués de Murrieta (Rioja DOCa) and Pazo de Barrantes (Rías Baixas DO).
The bodega has about 300 hectares of vineyards, and grows grapes such as tempranillo, garnacha, graciano and mazuelo for the red wines, and viura for the white wine. Of course, everything revolves around the highest quality. Tradition also plays a major role: Marqués de Murrieta makes classic Rioja. Tradition, however, is not the same as standstill, because, as Vicente Dalmau's father put it, you must constantly change everything so that everything can remain the same. That's exactly what happens. For example, the family had the old company building demolished and almost exactly the same rebuilt, but with the most modern gadgets. And that is also how she works on the wines: they are getting better, but never lose their identity.
All the vineyards of Finca Ygay (Marqués de Murrieta), together about 300 ha, are located at the bodega and are owned by the family. The now completely renovated Castillo Ygay is the headquarters of Marqués de Murrieta. Finca Ygay has significant differences in soil. The height of the vineyards varies from 300 to 500 m and the area falls under Rioja Alta. These differences in soil conditions give Murrieta the opportunity to produce varied wines.
The relatively cool location makes this area ideal for the production of the most refined wines. The largest vineyard: Valsalado produces the grapes for the Murrieta Reserva. The highest part of the domain is called La Plana. The grapes from this area (Tempranillo and Mazuelo), from old vines on loam, form the basis for the world-famous Gran Reserva Especial Castillo Ygay (which is made only in good years) and the excellent white wine Capellania. This wine, aged for 15 months in French oak; a Burgundian-looking wine, but also a beautiful and modern white Rioja. The somewhat lower Las Canajas vineyard, where Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in the 1980s, has a pebble and calcareous clay soil. Since 1994, the grapes from this area have been the basis for Dalmau, the "modern" Murrieta, named after Vicente Dalmau jr., One of the current owners.
Very rare is the rare white Castillo Ygay from 1986 (100 Parker points!), But still very vital! This wine is an assembly of Viura and Malvasia.
The oenologist Maria Vargas, originally from Argentina, has been responsible for the winery's wines since 1995. A winged statement of her is that oak wood in a wine is like a woman's perfume, it should never predominate. She subtly uses American oak from Pennsylvania and Ohio. Tempranillo is the main blue grape, with smaller quantities of Graciano, Garnacha and Carinena and Marqués de Murrieta is one of the few Bodegas in Rioja to use Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the preparation of their wines. Viura and a very small amount of Malvasia is mainly cultivated as a white grape.
