Description
The Pujanza Norte comes from the 2.7 hectare El Notre vineyard at 720 meters altitude that consists of clay-limestone soils, the layers of limestone are only 50 cm below the surface. The winemaker puts flowers on the vineyard, so that the vines have to go deeper for water, which gives the wine its special character, among other things.
The Pujanza Notre has had 14 months of education on French oak. The Pujanza Norte has an intense nose with aromas of fresh red fruit, licorice, light vanilla notes, some smokiness, fresh herbs and a beautiful minerality. The wine shows complexity and freshness, very expressive. Fine wood, spiciness and in the end a bit of the smell of ink. Full body, nice acids, all nicely balanced with strong tannins. The Pujanza Notre is an elegant, powerful yet fresh wine and has beautiful refined tannins, which gives this wine a beautiful drinking window. A great exciting wine.
A beautiful magnum of 1.5 liters packed in an original wooden box.
95/100 Parking points
Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach they are constantly improving the quality of his wines. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo with a focus on absolute top quality with an emphasis on fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker, without exception, rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honorary division) says enough. The Norte and Cisma are the top models of Pujanza.

Named after the north-facing plot where the Tempranillo grapes grow, the 2015 Norte is Tempranillo that fermented in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic. Élevage was in French barriques and lasted 15 months. 2015 was a ripe and warm year that managed to combine ripeness and freshness. This is always sourced from the same vineyard, which is located at 720 meters altitude and is around 20 years old—the youngest vineyard they have. Carlos San Pedro planted it with a massal selection that ripens quite early; in fact, in 2017 it was the first vineyard they harvested. It ripens properly and keeps good acidity. They stopped using 100% new oak in 2012, and the oak is very integrated and folded into the wine, even now that they have extended the élevage. This could very well be the finest Norte to date, with very chalky tannins. It feels quite young. 11,000 bottles were filled in September 2017.

James Suckling
A rich and elegant Rioja with a hint of bitter-chocolate on the nose, then a great balance of creaminess and substantial dry tannins on the palate. Long, but slightly chewy finish. Drink or hold.

Bodegas Pujanza is located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The winery is located in one of the most beautiful villas in this region. A real prime location in the most beautiful part of the Rioja. Bodegas Pujanza is one of the youngest (top) Rioja houses and started in June 2002. It is a family business with a long tradition of growing grapes and wine making in the capital of the Rioja Alavesa. The location in the valley of the Ebro and the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, partly determines the character of the Pujanza wines.
Owner Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach, they try to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo where the focus is on absolute top quality with emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honor division) says enough. The 4 main wines are the Hado, the Valdepoleo (in the past this wine was called the Pujanza Pujanza) the Norte and the cult wine the Cisma.
Carlos is one of the pioneers together with Remirez de Ganuza in the field of modern style Rioja's and has the luxury that his vineyards are situated high so that there are good differences between day and night temperature. This gives the wines extra complexity and freshness. Carlos only works with single vineyards except at the Hado (here the grapes are used from the norte and Valdepoleo vineyards). Carlos has divided all 3 vineyards into plots (except the Cisma vineyard because it is so small) and all these plots are vinified separately. Only just before bottling, the various plots are combined until it has the desired taste and then it is bottled. This concept is far from economical but does make for great wines. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he deliberately chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to raise the wines longer in large (used) barriques.
Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of this renowned winery and supplies both consumers and Horeca and Retail.
