Description
Domaine Guiberteau is a renowned winery located in the Saumur appellation of the Loire Valley in France. They are best known for their expressive wines made from the Chenin Blanc grape. One of their standout wines is the Saumur Blanc, which beautifully reflects the essence of the terroir and grape variety. Domaine Guiberteau's vineyards cover approximately 17 hectares, a significant portion of which is planted with Chenin Blanc. Since 2007, the vineyards have been managed organically, with an emphasis on preserving the natural balance and biodiversity. The vines range in age from 4 to 80 years, which contributes to the complexity of the wines.
For Saumur Blanc, the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, which ensures an authentic expression of the grape and the terroir. After fermentation, the wine is aged on the fine lees, which promotes texture and depth.
Guiberteau's Saumur Blanc has a powerful yet refined character and is certainly not an average understatement. It is a very layered wine with aromas of spiced pear, dandelion, chamomile and lime. This wine is versatile in gastronomic combinations. It goes well with breaded black cod, caviar and potato chips, but also with dishes with rich sauces or soft cheeses.

Guiberteau’s 2019 Saumur Blanc is from clay-limestone soils from lower on the hill in Brézé (older vines) and Clos des Carmes and Clos Guichaux (younger vines), all planted between the 1940s and 2012. Aged on fine lees in stainless steel tank until the spring and only lightly filtered, the 2019 exhibits a bright lemon-yellow color and a clear, pure, fresh and aromatic, intense and elegant bouquet with chalky limestone notes. Round, pure and mineral on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, utterly mineral and tightly structured Chenin with ripe pear flavors on the crisp and salty finish. This wine is full of energy, tension and finesse, and it's one of the finest you can get in this price range. Tasted in May 2021.
