Description
The 2018 René Bouvier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a special Burgundy wine from the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the most famous villages in the Côte de Nuits. Domaine René Bouvier is a family-owned winery that has been producing wines for over 100 years. It is a valued producer in the region and is considered one of the best producers of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
Features of the 2018 Vintage
2018 was a warm and sunny year in Burgundy, which brought perfect ripeness and healthy grapes. This translates into a powerful and concentrated wine with rich, ripe fruit aromas. The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has aromas of dark fruits, such as black cherries and plums, along with hints of spice, earthy accents, and subtle floral scents.
Flavor profile
The wine has a rich, full flavour with well-integrated tannins and a lively acidity that provides balance and elegance. The mouthfeel is silky and full, while the finish is long and complex with hints of spice, mineral notes, and a touch of oak. The powerful structure and depth allow this wine to age well and become even more complex with age.
Storage potential
The 2018 René Bouvier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine with great ageing potential. It is expected to only gain in refinement and depth over the next 10 to 20 years, developing more and more tertiary aromas such as truffle, leather, and forest floor.
This Grand Cru wine is a wonderful choice for lovers of elegant, complex Burgundian Pinot Noir and can be paired beautifully with refined dishes such as roast poultry, lamb, or game.

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side, with the vines averaging 60 years of age. I much prefer the bouquet here compared to the Echézeaux: well defined with good mineral tones, redcurrant and cranberry fruit with hints of undergrowth and even a tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite structured for a Charmes-Chambertin with a solid, quite grippy finish that needs to muster a little more charm by the finish. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle.
Réné Bouvier’s winery hides behind the Super-U supermarket round the corner from Philippe Charlopin. He told me that after the frost, the vines produced bunches with small berries that tended to ripe with more alacrity than those unfrosted, a similar observation to many winemakers. He described the mildew pressure as unbelievable, something that he had never seen before. By the time of harvest (Réné could not recall the exact date off the top of his head), he found the berries to be in healthy conditions and good acidity levels. The wines were a little variable as you might expect givens the growing season and actually I was more taken by his village crus that tended to punch above their weight. Check out the Vosne-Romanée in this respect.
