Description
In the Encyclopedia of Wines and Spirits of All Countries, Alexis Lichine writes: “In Meursault les Perrières is the best vineyard parcel and the wine from the heart of this cru, the Clos des Perrières, is comparable or more beautiful to Montrachet”. A remarkable wine that can be kept for a very long time, the Clos des Perrières is capable of an excellent evolution, which was demonstrated in 1999 by a vertical tasting from 1997 to 1895, published in the Bourgogne magazine Today under the title Tout Près Everest (Close to Everest). This exceptional evolution was confirmed again in 2019 during another tasting to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the estate.
Albert Grivault is a domain that remains somewhat under the radar (of course not with the connoisseurs) in the press because he never sends his bottles to be judged. Those who know these wines become regular customers because the wines can compete with the very best and only a few are made. A nice anecdote about the Cuvee is that during a horizontal tasting of Meursault Perrieres in London, when uncorking the participating bottles, a cork from Albert Grivault came out of a bottle twice. 1 from a bottle of Albert Grivault and 1 from a bottle of Maison Leroy Perrieres…., Since then it has been an open secret that the Perrieres from Leroy is made by Grivault. Of course both deny it!
The Albert Grivault estate, headed by grandson Michel Bardet, is the largest landowner in the 1er Cru Perrières and owns approximately a third of the total surface area in this prized 1er Cru. The 2019 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a fragrant floral bouquet with scents of white fruit, popcorn, quince and light orange blossom. Fine definition, but not the most powerful. It is nicely balanced with a touch of blossom, vanilla and peach. It has good depth and everything is kept tense by the acidity.

The Albert Grivault family domain is managed by Michel Bardet (and his daughter Claire), who is the grandson of the founder Albert Grivault. The domain started in 1879. This was one year after the arrival of phyloxerra in Meursault and at the time it had properties in Meursault and Clos de Vougeot. In 2019, the Albert Grivault estate celebrated its 140th anniversary; a successful family legacy spanning four generations. After Albert Grivault, the estate was run by Albert Grivault's widow and then by his daughters Berthe Grivault and Mathilde Grivault.
Together they managed to overcome the crisis of 1929 and the two world wars. In 1980 Albert Grivault's grandchildren, Michel Bardet, Marguerite and Denise Chevignard, née Bardet, took over the estate. Marguerite Bardet continued to work on the estate until 2019. Since 2004, responsibility for the estate has passed to Claire Bardet, managing director, assisted by Henri Marc, in charge of vinification under the direction of Michel, who still participates in the aging and marketing of the wines. Albert Grivault's wines are made for minerality and have great aging potential.
