Description
This castle is called Ch. Capbern since the 2014 vintage, while it used to be called Ch. Capbern Gasqueton. Nowadays it is also called: Château Capbern - THE OTHER PROPERTY OF CALON SÉGUR because it is part of Calon Segur and is also made by the same wine team.
It is the third wine, an integral member of the Calon Ségur family and it comes mainly from the estate’s young vines with a balanced blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Formerly known as La Chapelle de Calon, then Le Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur, it has been renamed since the 2019 vintage with Le C de Calon Ségur. C as the third letter of the alphabet, for the estate’s third label. C as “Coeur”, the heart, symbol of the love that the Marquis de Ségur brought to the estate, and a unique distinguishing mark of our bottles.
C like Calon.
The Capbern is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and has an alcohol percentage of 14.6%. Aged for 16 months in barriques, of which 60% are new. Deep purple-black in colour, it jumps from the glass with vibrant aromas of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chestnut, lead pencil and forest floor plus a touch of lavender. Full, rich and bursting with juicy fruit, with a firm line of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a spicy lift. This is a 1.5 litre magnum.

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Capbern explodes from the glass with notes of prunes, baked black cherries and fruitcake plus suggestions of mocha, Chinese five spice, tobacco leaf and cedar chest with a touch of peppercorns. Full-bodied, rich and voluptuous (15.1% alcohol!), the palate has a firm, chewy backbone and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.

A perfumed nose of mulberries, dark cherries, earth, black tea, cloves and cedar. Full-bodied with tight, sinewy tannins. Well structured and balanced with a fleshy texture and a flavorful, long finish. Big wine. Drink from 2025.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Capbern is ripe and flamboyant, with soft edges and superb balance. It's a big wine, there is no doubt about that, and yet it also boasts terrific harmony. Dark fruit, new leather, licorice and chocolate build as the 2019 gains intensity through the mid-palate and into the finish. The 15.1% alcohol is not terribly evident.

The origins of this Saint-Estèphe based estate go back to the XVIIIth century, out of a wedding between the Rivière and Capbern families, and then Capbern and Gasqueton. A few years later, in 1894, the Capbern-Gasqueton purchase a certain… Calon Ségur! Generations succeeded to each other at the head of these two mythical crus of Saint-Estèphe until 2011, which marks the passing of Denise Gasqueton, last owner carrying that name. It is then that Suravenir purchases these estates and blows a new dynamic, with the respect of the history.
Capbern’s terroir features an extraordinary qualitative breeding ground, in the proper nature of the soils. The soils, well exposed and slightly sloping, favor the perfect maturation of the berries and benefit from a good draining.
Under the same management as Calon Ségur, its sister estate, Capbern is benefiting from a gravity fed vat house of 37 vats, and an ageing cellar in which the wines are going to mature for 18 months.
