Description
Château Haut Batailley is located at the entrance to the Pauillac appellation, and a large tower "La Tour l'Aspic" stands on the terroir, which is directly opposite Château Batailley and touches Château Grand Puy Lacoste and the St Julien appellation. The Cazes family, who run Château Lynch-Bages, are the proud new owners of Château Haut-Batailley, an 1855 Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac, previously owned by the Brest-Borie family.
The 2019 Haut-Batailley is bursting with aromas of mint, loamy soil, violets, cedarwood and spices, followed by a medium to full, juicy palate with a beautiful fruit core, lively acidity and powdery structuring tannins. The 2019 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 76% and Merlot 24%. This is the second vintage produced by the Cazes family since the purchase of the castle in 2017. This is without a doubt a rising star and a wine that will rise sharply in price in the coming years, especially now that the 2019 is already receiving such high ratings from the international wine press. Suckling (96/100) ends his review with: " Cazes family making the difference"

Displaying a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 Haut-Batailley opens with fragrant notes of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry preserves and redcurrant jelly, leading to suggestions of fragrant soil, dried mint, woodsmoke and Sichuan pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers impactful, vibrant black fruit flavors with a racy line of freshness and finely grained tannins to support, finishing long with lots of savory and mineral sparks.

From: 2+2=5: Bordeaux 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)
The 2019 Haut-Batailley has a very attractive, wonderfully delineated bouquet, with blood orange tincturing the vibrant black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, slightly peppery in style with real depth and longevity on the finish. This is excellent and might well represent the best vintage under "new management."

From: Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Haut-Batailley has a precise and quite understated bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, cedar and mint, just a very slight floral note developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite infused black fruit, classic in style, very well balanced with wonderful tension. It fans out effortlessly on the finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Haut-Batailley is a potent, muscular Pauillac that will need a few years in bottle, at a minimum, to be at its best. There's real presence and depth here, but all the wine's energy feels like it is focused inward. Dark red/purplish fruit, leather, menthol, spice and wild flowers fill out the layers as this broad, ample Pauillac shows off its distinctive personality. Readers should be in no rush.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Haut-Batailley, matured in 60% new oak for 14 months, has a tensile, well-defined bouquet, linear and focused (much more so than last year from barrel), featuring blackberry, briar, that same tincture of blood orange and a hint of cedar. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and very cohesive and harmonious. Though there is a little new oak to be subsumed, that will happen over the next 2–3 years. Showing great depth and composure on the finish, this is a wonderful Pauillac that will give 30 or 40 years of drinking pleasure.

Both families have had strong roots in the Pauillac and Médoc landscape for generations. Château Haut-Batailley, bought by the Brest-Borie family in the 1930s, has been managed until now by François Xavier Borie. Château Haut-Batailley today covers about 40 hectares, of which 22 hectares are already planted. As for grape variety, the Chateau has 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The vines are on average 35 years old.
