Description

history of Château Cos d'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel was founded in 1811 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel in Saint-Estèphe (Médoc). The estate grew to become a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In addition to the prestigious 'grand vin', a second wine has been produced since the 1990s under the name Les Pagodes de Cos, with the aim of producing more accessible wines with the character of the terroir.

owners and team behind the wines

The château is now owned by Michel Reybier. The farming and vinification are carried out with respect for tradition and quality. The second wine, Pagodes de Cos Blanc, comes from younger vines and selected plots. Production takes place in modern and wood-lined cellars, which preserves freshness and finesse.

Saint-Estèphe region and terroir

Saint‑Estèphe is located just northwest of Pauillac, on gravelly, chalky soils mixed with clay and sand. These soils allow the vines to root deeply and retain water, contributing structure and minerality. The temperate Atlantic climate with calm summers and cool nights supports balanced ripening.

grape varieties and vineyards

The Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2019 is a blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Sémillon, from vines with an average age of approximately 35–40 years. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected for purity and freshness.

vinification of the 2019 Pagodes de Cos Blanc

After maceration under cool conditions, fermentation took place in French oak barriques, of which 8% new wood. Then followed maturation for several months on the fine lees. This process gives the wine texture, depth and a touch of wood complexity, without suppressing the fresh freshness.

color, odor and flavor profile

The wine is straw yellow with a wafer green sheen. On the nose, aromas of white peach, honey pear, citrus tart and orange blossom open, enhanced by mineral tones of stone. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a soft oily texture, fresh acidity and a salty minerality. The finish ends with a spicy touch of white pepper and spices.

why order this wine?

The 2019 Pagodes de Cos Blanc is an excellent introduction to the Cos d'Estournel story in white. It combines elegance, structure and complexity in an accessible way, with gastronomic versatility. Fresh acidity and light wood tones make this wine inviting and refined – ideal for serious lovers looking for a white Bordeaux with character.
