Description
The family ties that linked great-grandmother Marthe to Auguste Rodin's patron (Maurice Fenaille) inspired Faiveley to create 'Ouvrées Rodin'. Made with grapes from the old vine plot, and with its complexity from chalky scree soils, this wine exudes finesse and elegance that sets it apart from Clos de Bèze. This marvel reflects our deep attachment to art and to Burgundy. The vines were planted in 1966. The very seductive nose reveals complex fruity aromas combined with spicy flowers. On the palate, fine tannins provide a long-lasting liveliness, complemented by notes of fresh mint and white pepper. The cuvée 'Les Ouvrées Rodin' embodies the intense, subtle expression of the terroir.

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Les Ouvrées Rodin is showing brilliantly from bottle, unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, cherries, red berries, grilled game, licorice, spices and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, with a deep and intense core of sapid fruit that cloaks its satiny but abundant structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a seriously long, penetrating finish. This special cuvée hails from a parcel of vines planted in 1966 on the Chambertin side of Clos de Bèze, and its name commemorates a Faiveley family connection with the sculptor Rodin.
This was an impressive tasting with Eve and Erwan Faiveley and able winemaker Jérôme Flous. Likening the vintage to "a broader-shouldered 2007," a judgment with which I wholeheartedly concur, Flous presented a selection of some of the 2017 portfolio's high points. Supple, expressive and nicely integrated, the reds showed very well; and the two whites were simply superb. I also revisited a selection of 2016s at my office in the United States, wines that are more classically balanced and seemingly more consistent than Faiveley's 2015s. I'll be reporting more on the winemaking and vineyard changes that have ushered in a new era at this address—as well as publishing the results of a vertical of the emblematic Clos des Corton Faiveley—in the near future. In the meantime, all these offerings come warmly recommended.

The history of Domaine Faiveley dates back to 1825. The domain has been family-owned for 7 generations and is located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy. 127 ha Vineyards, spread over Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, of which 12 vineyards with Grand Cru classification, 25 with Premier Cru classification and 6 vineyards with a "Monopole" classification. The estate is managed by Erwan Faiveley, who keeps the work in the vineyards in-house to control the quality of the grapes. The hand-picked harvest is carefully transported to 19th century vaulted cellars located in Nuits-Saint-Georges. To make great Burgundies, Erwan Faiveley combines the principles of modern oenology with traditional aging in French oak barrels. All this contributes to the fact that Faiveley wines are highly regarded.
