Description
The Harlan Estate is inky black with a purple edge and offers a beautiful earthy aroma with blackberry and cherry, lavender, followed by deep, lush, majestic flavor that caresses the palate with refined tannins. Classic earth, oak and laurel character on the nose, along with dark fruits such as currants and blackberries. Forest flowers too. Full to medium body, linear and tight with coolness and freshness. What balance and intensity. Tight in his younger years but full of energy and length. Incredibly sophisticated and seductive. A pleasure to taste now, but try it in 2025, but it is no problem to keep it in the cellar for another 35 years (but that would be a shame).
Note - the Harlan Estate is an absolute cult wine of which only a maximum of 1500 cases are made annually. Approximately 85% of production remains in the USA and the remainder is distributed among official importers. There are currently more fake Harlan on the market than the real Harlan Estate, so be extremely careful. If the wine has a price that is too-good-to-be-true, it is almost always certain that this is not real and is therefore extremely expensive. As an importer, we receive the wines directly from Harlan Estate and have therefore not made a world trip via many places all over the world in containers in often questionable conditions (hot, cold, etc.) that cannot be checked (as well as on the well-known auction sites). ). Click here to verify the authenticity of the bottles using the code on the label. The Harlan Estate is packaged as standard in a beautiful wooden box with 3 bottles (OWC), but can also be ordered per bottle if desired.
The 2019 vintage is one of the most beautiful vintages and has received 100/100 Parker & 100/100 points from James Suckling, so the wine journalists are quite unanimous.

The head-spinning 2019 Harlan Estate is truly amazing stuff. Gentle cedar notes lead into layered dark chocolate and cassis, somehow impossibly rich yet savory. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, this is dense, packed with flavor but seemingly weightless, with a lush, lingering finish that combines intensity with freshness to compel sip after sip. Like all truly great wines, it's full of somehow harmonious contradictions.
Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate is woven into the western hills of Oakville, with 40 planted acres set amid scrub and forests from 325 to 525 feet above sea level. Up a sparsely marked private road, it's an undulating oasis in the hills, with views over the valley from select vantage points. As proprietor Bill Harlan pointed out, one of the unique aspects of Harlan is the team that constitutes the heart of Harlan. Founding director Don Weaver joined in 1986, director of winegrowing Bob Levy, in 1988. Current winemaker Cory Empting was hired in 2001, and the "newcomer" is Will Harlan, Bill's son, who joined full-time in 2012. "That continuity has been a huge thing for us," said Bill, as we caught up on the close to 20 years since we'd last chatted.
The vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Franc (8%) and Petite Verdot (2%), but when asked about the varietal makeup of the 2019 Harlan Estate, Weaver expertly deflected. "We're not trying to express varietal character; we're trying to express a specific place."
My afternoon with the Harlan team also included tastings of the Bond and Promontory wines, listed separately.

From: Napa Valley: The Frantic 2020s & Stunning 2021s (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Harlan Estate is supremely elegant. Bright floral accents perk up a core of red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, sage and mint all run through the 2019. Medium in body and gracious, the 2019 is all energy. It's not so much a wine of a vintage, but rather a wine that reflects the personality of a place and style. Time in the glass brings out the wines breath and resonance, yet notable freshness and verve remain. This is one of the more delicate, nuanced wines readers will taste from 2019, a year that generally yielded wines of opulence.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2022
Two thousand-twenty will likely go down a seminal vintage at Harlan Estate, Bond and Promontory. More than just a story of a single vintage, 2020 has set a new direction for these properties. The team led by Managing Director Will Harlan and Director of Winemaking Cory Empting faced the same challenges as everyone else, but the results aren’t the same. These are some of the very few 2020s I can call exceptional. The entire crop was harvested much earlier than usual, by necessity. Over time, the team was so happy with the wines that harvesting is now much earlier than it was in the past, but by choice.
I have written for many years that the Harlan Estate wines have been moving towards greater freshness. Two thousand-twenty is a big step in that direction. I also had a chance to revisit the 2012 and 2002, which is even more interesting in that while those wines were made during different eras, there is a recurring theme that connects the wines across time. Perhaps that is an expression of place, or of a house style, maybe both. But it is quite evident. Last but certainly not least, the bottled 2019s turned out beautifully.
