Description
Paolo Scavino, an Italian winery of unparalleled class. The Barolo represents a selection of fruit from 7 separate vineyard plots spread across the main Barolo plots. The fruit from those sites is vinified separately and once each barrel is tasted, the final blend is created. Barrels of wine that do not meet the estate's quality standards are sold as bulk wine. The wine is aged for 10 months in barriques and then for a further 12 months in large "casks" and then a further 12 months in bottle. This is a beautiful wine that opens to cherry and blackberry aromas with elegant notes of crushed stone, smoke, licorice and tar. This is an excellent Barolo that is approachable in the short to medium term.
This wine goes well with red meat (grilled/roasted), lamb, fur game and cheeses that are rich and powerful in taste. The Nebbiolo grapes (the noble grape of Italy) that are used for this delicious wine are picked in early October. Fermentation follows later in stainless steel. The malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels and then a maturation of 12 months in French barriques. The wine then remains in large French oak barrels for another 12 months before bottling. Finally, 1 year of maturation follows in the bottle.

The Paolo Scavino 2020 Barolo (with Enrico Scavino’s signature on the front of the bottle) has a handful of savory herbs, barbecue rub, ripe plum, sweet cherry and dried currant. There are notes of aniseed, but otherwise, the wine is quite broad-brushed, thick or husky on the mid-palate. It ends with balanced freshness. The blend borrows fruit from Rocche Moriondino, Vignolo, Pernanno, Terlo, Albarella, Vignane, San Bernardo, Cerretta and Bussia Vigna Fantini. It ages in oak casks for 22 months, and 50,000 bottles were made.
The death of Enrico Scavino, 82, on February 25, 2024, marks the passing of yet another legendary figure in Barolo.
Enrico Scavino, of the celebrated Paolo Scavino winery, was among an elite group of winemakers who would later become known as the “Barolo Boys.” This tight-knit group of visionaries raised the bar on quality by incorporating techniques from outside the Langhe (such as the use of barrique and rotofermenters). They traveled far and wide across the great wine regions of the world, and the information they brought back home would contribute to the rise of Barolo as one of the world’s most coveted wines.
The interpretation that Scavino gave to Nebbiolo prized elegance, brightness and harmony. The Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi was among the wines to cement the greatness of this prized cru. All of the MGA wines made today—Bricco Ambrogio, Monvigliero, Ravera, Prapò, Rocche dell’Annunziata and the newly added Rocche di Castiglione—are fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak botte for about two years.
Based in Castiglione Falletto, the estate was founded in 1921 by Lorenzo Scavino and split between two heirs in 1943. Paolo Scavino, Enrico’s father, would create the current winery. Together, father and son would adopt a single-vineyard philosophy, starting with Bric dël Fiasc (first produced in 1978). That wine comes from a 2.5-hectare site in Castiglione Falletto at 270 meters above sea level with typical Sant’Agata marl and Diano d’Alba sandstone soils.
Enrico Scavino is survived by his daughters Enrica and Elisa, who manage the winery today. They represent the fourth generation of the Scavino family to make wine.
The Scavino family has understandably gone through a very difficult time. In terms of the wines presented this year, I encountered some worrisome metallic or tinny aromas that could indicate low levels of Brettanomyces or some other problem in the winery or in the oak. I encountered it throughout many of the MGA wines from 2020. Looking back at my notes for 2019 (which was applauded as a less problematic vintage compared to the warmer 2020 growing season), I see that there too I described metallic aromas in some of the wines, which mask the fruit. Going back beyond 2019, the problem no longer exists.
Among this group, I liked the 2020 Barolo and the Scavino family’s newest addition to their wide-ranging portfolio: the 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione. Those wines and the special 2016 Barolo Riserva Paolo Scavino fu Cav. Lorenzo are clear of that metallic note. The family did not make the Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata in 2020.

A beautiful Barolo here with a touch of dried spices to the grapefruit citrus, minerals, camphor and dried flowers. Melted, chalky tannins on the palate with medium to full body and a long, mineral-driven finish. Lots of clarity and finesse here. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Barolo is seriously beautiful. Pliant and creamy, with terrific depth, the 2020 impresses with its bold, open-knit personality. A burst of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, mint and spice lend notable character to this decidedly exuberant Barolo from the Scavino family.

Enrico Scavino, along with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, hit it out of the park in both 2019 and 2020. These are some of the most impressive wines I tasted on my fall trip to Piedmont. Readers will want to take a look at the notes, as they convey a better sense of each wine than any broader comments can. There are plenty of highlights in both 2019 and 2020, but they aren’t the same wines. That’s just a reflection of how small vineyard sites respond to the unique qualities of each vintage.

Paolo Scavino winery is a historic winery in the Italian region of Barolo. It was founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1921 by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Agriculture has always been a family tradition and passion of the Scavino family.
Now Enrico Scavino runs the family domain together with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, the 4th generation. He already worked in the winery in 1951 when he was only 10 years old. A young winemaker who has inherited the passion and dedication of his country. Through more than 60 years of experience, his focus has been on investing in Nebbiolo's major cru to demonstrate the uniqueness of each terroir. The working method of this beautiful winery is inspired by the love and respect they have for their terroirs. Their pursuit of purity of expression, complexity and elegance for their wines is also a great source of inspiration. The winery works with the 3 local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo.
Paolo Scavino winery owns 29 hectares in the Barolo area, and works on 20 historic Barolo crus in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family stands out for their meticulous care of the vineyards and their passion for the terroir. They focus on the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. When making the wine, minimal interventions are pursued to preserve the natural diversity of the terroir.

Paolo Scavino winery owns 29 hectares in the Barolo area, and works on 20 historic Barolo crus in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The Scavino family stands out for their meticulous care of the vineyards and their passion for the terroir. They focus on the care of the vines in order to grow ripe and healthy grapes. When making the wine, minimal interventions are pursued to preserve the natural diversity of the terroir.
