History of Vie di Romans and the Friuli region
Founded in the early twentieth century, Vie di Romans has been led by Gianfranco Gallo since 1978. He reformed the vineyards and laid the foundation for a strict terroir-oriented approach on chalky clay soils near the Slovenian border. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is known for its cool sea breezes and continental climate, ideal for preserving fresh acidity and aromatic intensity in white grapes.

The vineyards are located around Mariano del Friuli, near the Isonzo river. The climate is temperate with cool northern winds that slow down ripening and maintain lively acidity. On about 60 hectares, grapes are grown using natural methods with low yields, which contributes to a concentrated expression of the fruit
Grape varieties and style of Vie di Romans Dut' Un 2021
The 2021 Dut' Un is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. This combination creates a harmonious whole: the Chardonnay brings roundness and fruit richness, the Sauvignon Blanc adds freshness and spicy nuances. The wine matured on the lees in stainless steel vats for nine months, without malolactic fermentation, to preserve purity and structure.
Vinification, harvest and maturation of the 2021 vintage
The grapes were carefully harvested in 2021, followed by soft pressing and controlled temperature fermentations between 16–19 °C. Fermentation was followed by nine months of maturation in rvs-sur-lees, which gives the wine texture and complexity. No malolactic conversion took place, so that the fresh acidity was preserved.
Color, aroma and taste of Dut' Un 2021
Visually, the wine shows a bright golden color with green reflections. In the nose there are aromas of butter, citrus, green vegetables, fresh almond, mint, sage and herbs such as chamomile and sage. In the mouth, the wine presents itself soft, rich, structured and elegant, with notes of mirabelles, citrus, jammy fruit and a long, velvety finish. This version is a magnum of 1.5 liters.
Rating by international wine critics
The 2021 Dut' Un is praised as one of the top wines from Friuli Isonzo. James Suckling rated it 93 points and spoke of "intense and complex wine with notes of cotton candy, Mirabelle plums, straw and candied citrus". Robert Parker also praises older vintages for their rich structure and ripe fruit, with scores of up to 96+ points.

This is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc aged on the lees in steel vats for nine months. The Vie di Romans 2016 Dut' Un is a full-bodied white with generous textural richness that is built tall with layers of orchard fruit, apricot, cooked pear, spice, custard and lemon mousse. Production is a mere 6,806 bottles. This is an exceptional wine that relies on its geographic origin and the well-draining limestone clay soils of the vineyard for its flavor intensity and purity. The lees aging is important to affirming its creamy texture and firm construction. All of this beautiful fruit abundance is rendered linear and sharp thanks to the wine's strong mineral identity. I would love to try the Dut' Un 10 years from now.
This is an outstanding set of new releases from Vie di Romans. These wines represent one of the greatest value to price propositions found anywhere in Italy. I cannot recommend them more enthusiastically. Gianfranco Gallo and his team have a few other exciting surprises in store. First is a new expression of Pinot Nero to debut with the 2016 vintage (which I have not yet been able to taste) that opens the estate portfolio to an early-ripening red grape that is well suited to the local climate. Speaking of climate change, the estate has also worked on a new project called I Climat (first made in 2015) that is a special selection of fruit from within the Chardonnay plantings of the Vie di Romans and the Ciampagnis parcels. Six wines representing these micro selections within the single vineyards were releases in 2019. The Merlot Voos dei Ciamps was not made in 2017.

Beautiful nose with ripe quince fruit, candied oranges, young nuts, dried herbs, honeysuckle and beeswax. Spices, too. Full-bodied, tense and nervy with creamy texture and tingly acidity. Complex and characterful with a waxiness to the texture but in a good way. Lingering and bright. A blend of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Dut Un is simply stunning, seducing with a wave of confectionary spices, lemon custard, crushed yellow apples and sweet white flowers. It teases the palate with zesty acidity while delivering an opulent dose of ripe orchard fruits and melon offset by depths of saline minerality. The 2020 cleans up beautifully through the finale, incredibly long and potent yet fresh, hinting at rich notes of spice and hazelnut that will come forward with further cellaring. The Dut Un is an equal-part blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2021s from Vie di Romans burst from the glass with all of the power of the vintage with the tantalizing acidity to balance. Proprietor Gianfranco Gallo explained that this was a Mediterranean vintage with excellent diurnal shifts that produced berries with thin skins, yet very fragrant. I had a chance to revisit the 2020 vintage with the Dut Un, a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Sauvignon Blanc, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite wines in the portfolio. Next up was a selection from Gallo’s I Climat project. Vie di Romans has been focused on exposing and promoting the individual terroirs throughout their vineyards in Isonzo. The decision was to use Chardonnay as the variety that could communicate them best. All six I Climat wines are vinified in the same manner, aged completely in small stainless steel tanks so that the style in each bottle results from the terroir and nothing else. Unfortunately, they are not currently imported into the United States, but they are worth seeking out.

The house Vie di Romans is located in the Isonzo - the lower part of Friuli - between the Adriatic Sea and Collio. Because the country warms up during the day and cools down again at night, it often blows here. These conditions are ideal for wine growing. The wind quickly blows the grapes dry when wet, so they hardly need to be treated with pesticides.
Vie di Romans' Gianfranco Gallo was one of the first winemakers to see potential in the alluvial plain of Friuli. Thirty years ago he took over the domain from his father and in 1978 he released his first wine. Since 1990, almost all of his wines are monocépages (made from one and the same grape) from different vineyards. Gianfranco has its own style of wine making. He is particularly closely involved in every part of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and supervises the very strict use of pesticides - preferably none. The result is large, concentrated and complex wines that last a lifetime.
