The Casa Rojo Viñas Bastardas is a wine that combines the Murcia and Ribera del Duero regions and is a new wine, launched in October 2023. The 2021 Viñas Bastardas perfectly reflects Casa Rojo: innovation, originality, love, balance, and above all, passion. The wine is a blend of two typical grapes from the two appellations: Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from Ribera del Duero and Mourvedre from Murcia. Both are blended in a 50/50 ratio.
The Tempranillo comes from old vineyards between 35 and 100 years old in Burgos and Valladolid. The Monastrell comes from old vines around the Casa Rojo winery in Murcia, in the Valle de La Raja. The Tempranillo undergoes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then matures for at least 12 months in used French oak barrels. The Monastrell undergoes alcoholic fermentation in 11,000-liter French oak foudres and then malolactic fermentation in new 500-liter French oak barrels. Finally, the wine matures for at least 12 months in used barrels. The 2021 vintage is considered EXCELENTE in the Ribera del Duero and the IGP Murcia. There were no significant outliers in the Ribera del Duero, and the Tempranillo grapes were able to ripen well and were harvested under perfect dry conditions. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of around 1,000 meters and are between 35 and 100 years old. In Murcia, Casa Rojo has the great advantage of its Monastrell vineyards, which are situated at an altitude of 600 meters and face north. This results in abundant fruit and good acidity.
The crossed-out label of Casa Rojo's "Viñas Bastardas" symbolizes the unique vineyards located outside official wine regions. It emphasizes their exceptional quality despite the lack of official recognition.
The Casa Rojo Viñas Bastardas has an attractive, intense ruby red color. This blend is characterized by a large amount of excellent fruit, especially red fruit, excellent acidity, freshness, and an appealing sweetness. On the nose, we smell fresh red fruit on the attack, such as cherry, raspberry, and red currant, but with a little swirling, more dark fruit emerges, along with aromas of spice and a touch of leather. A very pleasantly fruity, somewhat velvety mouthfeel, where the fruit notes, complemented by good acidity and a hint of oak, are well-received, with a long finish and good body, perfect for enjoying with red meat, such as sirloin steak. In our opinion, the marriage of Tempranillo and Monastrell is a great success, and of course, as with all Casa Rojo wines, the presentation is also superb.
This exceptionally well-balanced wine also provides a unique opportunity for SDEN and WSET students to explore the aromas typical of the Ribera del Duero and other Mediterranean and balsamic aromas that Murcia brings to us. Another superb creation from Ernesto Peña, Fernanda Vázquez, Pablo Mompeán, Laura Rojo, and Jose Luis Gómez, the winemaking team at Casa Rojo.

"LOVE WHAT YOU DO. DO WHAT YOU LOVE" JOSÉ LUIS GÓMEZ -Making great wines takes time and a lot of dedication. Continuous improvement, continuous evolution and the search for perfection in the vineyard and then in the winery, is the only way. Only if you love your work can you show this dedication and passion. “THE MOST IMPORTANT VIRTUE OF A WINE IS BALANCE” LAURA MUÑOZ-ROJO. At Casa Rojo they make wines with which José Luis and Laura feel identified. They have the good fortune and luxury of being able to produce in the areas where they have their roots and admire with the two grapes they are passionate about: Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) in the continental climate of La Ribera del Duero and the Monastrell in our Mediterranean homeland, Tierra de Murcia. Recently, the unique white grapes from Ribero - Galicia have also been added, such as the Verdejo, Albariño and Sauvignon Blanc. Casa Rojo's vision is clear. "A wine should be a maximum expression of the soil, the grapes, the local climate."
Casa Rojo has been active since 2010, so it is a fairly young company, but now the wines of Casa Rojo are available in more than 40 countries, including USA, Singapore, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, etc and the demand exceeds the supply. Not surprising because the quality of the wines, the stories behind the wine and the livery are nothing short of unique.
