Description
In 1992 Thomas Haag, the son of the celebrated Brauneberg winemaker Wilhelm Haag, took over the Schloss. It was already very good, but Thomas has made it a Champions League domain by working hard. According to the Gault Millau, it belongs to the very best in Germany. And the only domain in Germany to receive the highest award in all guides! The suppleness and drinkability are trademarks of Schloss Lieser, such elegance and above all the temptation to swallow a wine can be found at few other producers. In short, a must have!
The SL Riesling from the Moselle wine-growing region reveals itself in the glass with a brilliantly shimmering light yellow color. This white wine from Schloss Lieser shows all kinds of peaches and ripe apples on the nose. As if that wasn't already impressive, the aging in stainless steel adds even more aromas such as minerals. On the palate, this light-footed white wine is characterized by an incredibly crunchy texture. The finale of this youthful white wine from the Moselle wine-growing region, more specifically from Lieser, captivates with a good aftertaste. The finish is also accompanied by mineral notes of the soil, which is dominated by limestone and shale. Feinherb is a fairly young taste designation and is in fact a halbtrocken but with a wider bandwidth. Compared to this regular Riesling Trock, this Feinherb is generally slightly sweeter without being super sweet
The basis for the elegant SL Riesling from the Moselle are grapes of the Riesling variety. The grapes grow under optimal conditions on the Moselle. The vines here dig their roots deep into the limestone and shale soil. After the harvest, the grapes quickly reach the winery. Here they are selected and carefully pressed. The fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Once fermentation is complete, the SL Riesling can continue to harmonize on the fine lees for several months. Delicious with light and savory dishes, potato pancakes with salmon or leek tortilla.

The 2019 Riesling trocken SL is pure, intense and slatey on the nose, with ripe Riesling fruit and notes of crushed stones. Mouthfilling on the palate, this is an elegant, intense and piquant Riesling that is round, quite juicy and already easy to quaff at this early stage. Tasted as a sample in April 2020.
Thomas Haag has again produced the full range of eight Grosses Gewächs Rieslings in 2019, which I will taste later this year. For this report, I can only give my first impressions of five grand crus, although they were still cloudy and not yet ready in spring when I predominantly tasted the lower levels and the—gorgeous—sweet predicate wines. However, I will share my first findings here, just in case you want to subscribe to them before they will be sold out.
About the season, Thomas Haag reports an early budding followed by optimal flowering, an exceptional summer with record temperatures and capricious weather in autumn. "All this has put us winegrowers under full strain. However, intensive manual work and precisely selective harvesting rewarded us with perfectly healthy grapes and exceptional qualities, albeit with lower yields. The cool nights in late summer helped the grapes to achieve an intense and concentrated aroma and perfect acidity levels, which promise excellent aging capacity."
The wines I have tasted so far are rich yet precise and elegant, presenting high extracts and a complex expression of the particular terroirs, all balanced by remarkably fine and stimulating acidity. One of my childs of sorrow, the Niederberg Helden, is the origin of a terrific series of Rieslings that can, thus far, only be topped by the selections from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
