Description
Anita Kuhnel used to be a professional cyclist. With the same 'drive', she now puts all her energy into making Beaujolais wines at Domaine Anita. Anita only uses high-quality terroirs. She makes wines from the Gamay grape that have already received several high scores from renowned critics, including Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast. Suckling(96/100) writes about the 2020 Tres Vieille Vigne: "... This Beaujolais masterpiece is so concentrated and so pure, with lush, velvety sensuality that reminds me of great Pomerol"
The Gamay grapes for this Anita Moulin-à-Vent Tres Vieille Vigne Les Caves come from the lieu-dit 'Aux Caves' in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. This vineyard is located on a granite surface, at an altitude of 220 meters, and is oriented to the south/southeast. The vines are 45 years old. The grapes are picked and selected by hand in the vineyard. The fermentation takes place for 11 days via the macération semi-carbonique technique, also called "Vinification Beaujolaise". This gives the wine a fruity character and ensures a smooth taste structure. After fermentation, the wine matures for 6 months in cement tanks and partly on wood and then for 4 months in the bottle. In the glass, the Tres Vieille Vigne Les Caves is ruby red with a purple glow. Very floral and elegant on the nose. Irises. Raspberries and strawberries. In the mouth aromas of raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants and rhubarb. Earth and spices. Refreshing acidity. Seductive. Delicious with coq au vin or a grilled steak.
The 2022 vintage received no less than 96/100 points from James Suckling: "This smells and tastes like the essence of Moulin-a-Vent, with stunning red fruit aromas plus delicate spicy and earthy notes. Wonderful freshness and precision for this very hot and dry vintage on the medium- to full-bodied palate."

This smells and tastes like the essence of Moulin-a-Vent, with stunning red fruit aromas plus delicate spicy and earthy notes. Wonderful freshness and precision for this very hot and dry vintage on the medium- to full-bodied palate. The contours of the tannins are very precise, giving this an astonishing clarity in the very long finish. Two thirds were 100% whole cluster and one third was destemmed. Everything was fermented and maturated in concrete tanks. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Moulin-à-Vent Très Vieille Vigne Les Caves comes from vines over 80-years old. It has an almost surly, backward bouquet that despite encouragement is not coming out to play, with hints of pressed iris flower reluctantly emerging. The palate is worth investigating: lovely balance, fine acidity, assiduous use of oak and a vibrant finish. Cellar this for 3-4 years to allow the aromatics to develop and you should have a wonderful Moulin-à-Vent.

Partially wood aged, this wine has spice to go with the ripe black fruits. Tannins come through strongly as does minerality from the granite subsoil. This powerful wine needs to age. Drink from 2023." - Wine Enthusiast
"What a beautiful nose of violets and ripe (but not overripe) blackberries this has! So succulent, with a wonderful interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral freshness on the concentrated, medium-bodied palate. Very long, velvety finish with so much finesse!" - James Suckling
"Fragrant nose of ripe perfumed fruit with a smoky character. Very interesting palate with soft enveloping fruit and fresh acidity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2026" - 93 punten, Decanter over de 2019-vintage
"Heerlijk fruitig, kersen, kruiden, zwoel. Puur en sappig, lichte tannine." - 4,5/5 sterren, Perswijn over de 2018-vintage
"Candied black fruit – this is almost going towards the Grenache style. Plenty of floral fragrance. Tacky tannic feel. Smooth and forthright – a seductress." - 16,5/20, Jancis Robinson over de 2017-vintage
"It has a very well defined bouquet with mineral-rich, fresh red berry fruit and hints of wilted violet petals emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, dark berry fruit mixed with a subtle marine note, just a suggestion of brine and brown spices enhancing the finish. What an excellent Moulin-à-Vent from the Kuhnels!" - 91 punten, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate over de 2016-vintage

With this she makes wines from the Gamay grape that has already received several high scores from renowned critics, including Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast.
Anita Kuhnel will retire from cycling in 2015 and will make it her mission to create top Beaujolais. She buys carefully selected terroirs in the crus Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, Chénas and Fleurie. The de-stalking of grapes and the use of wood give extra depth to her wines. Sulfite use is kept to a minimum. Her wines are particularly rich, concentrated wines that live up to the full potential of Gamay and also have a very good aging potential. Chénas is one of the smallest crus of Beaujolais and therefore a Beaujolais not often seen. The soils contain a lot of granite, which causes the vines to root more deeply. That gives small, concentrated grapes with a lot of taste. Morgon is one of the richest Beaujolais styles. The soils consist of granite and schist, of volcanic origin. With a lot of iron in the soil, the wines have more structure and earthy notes. What is exceptional about Moulin-à-Vent is the high amount of manganese in the granite soils. This manganese limits the yield, making the wines extra concentrated and deeper in taste, with more tannins. It is the fullest of all Beaujolais crus, and can also age very well. In Fleurie, Anita makes the Fleurie Poncié, which stands out for its strong floral, aromatic character.
