Description
About the Vie di Romans winery in Friuli
The Vie di Romans winery was founded in 1978 and is located in the Friuli Isonzo DOC, in northeastern Italy. Under the leadership of Gianfranco Gallo, Vie di Romans has become one of the most respected producers in the region. The estate works with great respect for terroir and vinification, vinifying each plot separately. The region is known for its alluvial soils of clay, gravel and limestone, and benefits from the Adriatic climate with warm days and cool nights. This contributes to the expressiveness and freshness of the wines. Gianfranco Gallo of Vie di Romans was one of the first winemakers to see potential in the alluvial plain of Friuli. More than 30 years ago, he took over the estate from his father and in 1978 he released his first wine. Since 1990, almost all of his wines have been mono-cépages (made from the same grape variety), each from a single vineyard. Gianfranco has a very unique style of winemaking. He is very closely involved in every part of the process: from the work in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and works as organically as possible. His wines first undergo a cold maceration, after which they are fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels (tonneaux and barriques). In order to maintain the freshness (a good acidity) in the wine, he does not carry out malolactic fermentation. After the alcoholic fermentation, the wines are aged for 8-9 months in stainless steel tanks or barriques, on their 'lie'.
2022 Chardonnay from Vie di Romans: origin and grapes
The 2022 Chardonnay is a single varietal wine, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from its own vineyards in the municipality of Mariano del Friuli. The soil consists of marl-rich alluvial deposits, which ensure good drainage and minerality. The grapes are harvested manually with an average yield of 49 hl/ha. The wine is certified as DOC Friuli Isonzo.
After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and undergo a temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation (18-19°C) in stainless steel tanks for about 10 days. The wine is then aged sur lie in stainless steel for 9 months, adding complexity and texture. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately avoided to preserve freshness. It is not filtered before bottling, which contributes to the full character of the wine.
In the nose we smell ripe fruit like pear, but also chamomile and floral notes. In the mouth this beautiful wine has beautiful layers with good acidity and a fine balance. The wine is creamy and rich in buttery almond, stone fruit, honey, orange peel. At the same time the wine is surprisingly light, fresh and silky in texture. In terms of Chardonnay this wine offers the full package. According to Monica Larner of the Wine-advocate you should not miss this Vie de Romans Chardonnay if you are a lover of a nice chardonnay

With nine months of élevage on the lees in barrique, the 2022 Friuli Isonzo Chardonnay Vie di Romans is a generous white with plenty of fruit weight. Prominent aromas of ripe peach and orchard fruit steal the show, but there are sweet notes of calla lily and hibiscus. There is even a savory hint of lavender, but the wine ends on a decidedly sweet note with a 14.5% alcohol content. Both attest to the hot 2022 growing season. This is an ample production of 66,500 bottles.
Vie di Romans completed construction on its new winery in 2023. The structure has three floors with a larger barrel room and a visitors center. Starting at the beginning of 2024, proprietor Gianfranco Gallo brought his wife and children into the winery management loop.

A complex and restrained wine with an intense nose of lemon leaves, pink grapefruit and mangoes, plus a whiff of herbaceous character. Medium-bodied, it shows a silky texture and elegance overall, with long, refreshing acidity and intoxicating savory length. Drink or hold.

A seductive bouquet of honeyed florals, almond custard, lemon curds and chamomile makes the 2022 Chardonnay Vie di Romans impossible to ignore. This is deeply textural, nearly oily and weighty in feel, yet still perfectly refined, with a saline mineral tinge up front that nicely balances its core of ripe orchard fruits. The 2022 cleans up beautifully, with a citrus concentration and hints of tropical melon that linger incredibly long as a bump of residual acidity maintains a lovely freshness. This is a fantastic effort.

The house Vie di Romans is located in the Isonzo - the lower part of Friuli - between the Adriatic Sea and Collio. Because the country warms up during the day and cools down again at night, it often blows here. These conditions are ideal for wine growing. The wind quickly blows the grapes dry when wet, so they hardly need to be treated with pesticides.
Vie di Romans' Gianfranco Gallo was one of the first winemakers to see potential in the alluvial plain of Friuli. Thirty years ago he took over the domain from his father and in 1978 he released his first wine. Since 1990, almost all of his wines are monocépages (made from one and the same grape) from different vineyards. Gianfranco has its own style of wine making. He is particularly closely involved in every part of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and supervises the very strict use of pesticides - preferably none. The result is large, concentrated and complex wines that last a lifetime.
